ICAR-National Yak Research Centre Demonstrates Advanced Rearing Technologies for Tribal Herders
TAWANG, AUGUST 6, 2025 — The ICAR-National Research Centre on Yak (NRC-Yak) executed a comprehensive technology demonstration and awareness initiative at Chuna grazing ground, Mago. Targeting tribal yak herders, the program emphasized modern husbandry practices to enhance productivity and animal health.

Key Technological Interventions Demonstrated
Principal Scientist Dr. Dinamani Medhi spearheaded knowledge transfer on critical advancements:
- Value Addition for Yak Products: Techniques to maximize economic returns from milk, meat, and fiber.
- Disease Prevention Protocols: Vaccination schedules and nutrient management strategies.
- Semi-Intensive Rearing Systems: Transition guidance from traditional nomadic practices to structured farming.

Disease Mitigation and Health Management
Dr. Medhi highlighted prevention of high-impact yak diseases, including:
Lumpy skin disease, Foot and mouth disease, Black quarter, Hemorrhagic septicemia, and parasitic infections.
Proactive surveillance and early intervention protocols were underscored to minimize herd losses.
Resource Distribution for Sustainable Herding
Participants received essential inputs:
- Animal nutrition supplements (mineral-rich feeds, salts).
- Protective gear (tarpaulins, gumboots).
- Veterinary medicines and solar-powered lighting systems.
Genetic Research Advancement
Field samples collected for the Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP) project aim to:
“Revolutionize genetic resilience research in yak populations through genomic mapping.”
Collaborative Framework
The event—hosted by ICAR-NRC-Yak (Dirang)—leveraged partnerships with:
- Tawang’s Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services.
- Indian Army’s Baisakhi Brigade.
Over 100 herders gained actionable insights for herd optimization.
ICAR-NRC Yak Centre’s 2025 tech demo educated tribal herders on semi-intensive farming, disease control & genetic research. 100+ participants benefited.
